The “child scheme” or “Kindchenschema” In his first research on animal kinship, Konrad Lorenz, an Austrian scientist, and ethologist, coined the expression “Kindchenschema”. This portmanteau is the human ability to respond innately to living creatures resembling babies. The more they look like a baby, the more we will find them cute. The size of the head and eyes disproportionate to the rest of the body is an important component. That’s why we find that kittens are so cute: they too adopt these characteristics.
